INITIATIVE

As a result of the armed conflict in Donbass, more than 3,350 civilians were killed, and over 7,000 were injured. Donbass Black Days initiative is designed to honor the memory of these innocent victims of the war. We appeal to the President of Ukraine V.A. Zelensky with a proposal to introduce the Day of Remembrance for the civilian victims of the conflict in Donbass.

This day, first civilians in the city were killed. At least 2 victims were recorded. The beginning of the active phase of the CTO in the Donetsk airport was accompanied by great chaos, the use of combat aircraft in the absence of information for the civilian population. The life of the city with a population of over 1 million people changed forever on this day.

Two days before the downing of the Malaysian Boeing flight MH-17, an unidentified combat aircraft struck the town of Snizhne. As a result, a section of a five-story residential building collapse.

On July 17, 2014, the aircraft operated scheduled flight MH17 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) took off from Amsterdam at 13:30 Kiev time and was heading to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Communication with the plane was interrupted at about 16.00. The remains of the aircraft fell near the villages Grabove, Rassipne and Petropavlivka, Donetsk region. Onboard there were 298 people (283 passengers and 15 crew members), no one survived.

For three days, there were fierce battles around the city with the use of all types of weapons, except for aviation. Rocket shelling covered some areas of the city on 27 July. The case became known thanks to a photograph of a young mother who died in a city park with a small child in her arms. In the media she was called «Madonna from Horlivka».

According to UN mission observers, 85% to 90% of civilian deaths are associated with the indiscriminate use of artillery weapons.
